This inquiry explored how complex systems could become understandable through human experience. Working with Blueway to redesign the Earth4All simulation, we examined why participants often struggled to engage with a systems-thinking experience designed to explore the interconnected social, economic, and environmental challenges shaping our future. Although the underlying systems model was robust, many participants found the experience overwhelming, making it difficult to connect complex system dynamics with meaningful human decisions.
Rather than simplifying the science, this inquiry explored how service design could make complexity more approachable by designing experiences that encouraged participation, collaboration, and reflection without reducing the integrity of the underlying systems model.

Research challenged my assumptions and reshaped how I understood the problem.
My Role
I worked as a Service Designer within a multidisciplinary team responsible for redesigning the end-to-end learning experience. I contributed to user research, synthesis, empathy mapping, customer journey mapping, benchmark analysis, concept development, service blueprinting, interface design, prototyping, user testing, facilitation design, and co-authoring the final client report.
How My Understanding Evolved
Information
We initially believed the challenge was helping participants understand more information. Our first instinct was to improve explanations, instructions, and access to data.
Experience
Research revealed that participants were not disengaging because the science was too difficult. They were disengaging because they were being asked to understand too much before they had experienced anything. Complexity became overwhelming before it became meaningful.
Participation
We realised that people rarely understand systems by reading about them. They understand them by interacting with them. Discussion, negotiation, experimentation, and seeing the consequences of their decisions helped participants build understanding more naturally than explanation alone.
Sensemaking
This shifted our design approach from presenting information to designing opportunities for sensemaking. Narrative, role-play, collaboration, emotional pacing, and reflection became ways for participants to experience complexity rather than simply learn about it.
Instead of reducing complexity, we designed experiences that helped people navigate it.

Design Response
We redesigned the Earth4All simulation into Arkos: The Age of Consequence, a facilitator-led hybrid learning experience that combined digital simulation with collaborative role-play.
Key interventions included minister roles, Citizen Voices, gradual onboarding, redesigned gameplay flow, simplified data visualisation, facilitation materials, a service blueprint, and a supporting digital interface.
Rather than simplifying the underlying systems model, Arkos enabled participants to experience complexity through participation, collaboration, and reflection.

Impact
Delivered a complete redesign proposal and implementation roadmap to Blueway and the Earth4All team.
Demonstrated how service design and systems thinking could improve engagement without reducing the integrity of the original systems model.
Produced a learning experience that shifted participants from passive information consumption to active discussion, negotiation, experimentation, and reflection.
Reflection
This inquiry fundamentally changed how I think about complexity. I learned that people rarely understand systems through explanation alone; they understand them by participating in experiences that reveal relationships, trade-offs, and consequences over time.
Rather than reducing complexity, I now seek to design conditions that help people navigate it. This project also deepened my appreciation of systems thinking – not simply as an analytical framework, but as something people need to experience before they can truly understand it and act upon it.
